Councillor Gagged

Labour Councillor Ian Grayson submitted the following question to Mayor Morgan, to be answered at the full Council Meeting 8th Oct. 2002.

“ Will the proposed Schools in the PFI bid open as intended in September2003?”

Council Officers refused to allow the question to be asked and referred Councillor Grayson's question to an Officer. One week later and the Councillor is still waiting for a response.

Councillor Grayson said

“ I feel the Residents and particularly the Parents of Children in the affected Schools should know exactly what is happening. The Mayor is opposed to the Building of a new School on the Spanish City Island site and consequently he has delayed this process. I am very concerned that this project may be lost, or at the very least due to the delay, cause major disruption to the education of the Children at the Schools involved.”

The contracts were supposed to be exchanged in early June 2002. This has not happened and the 4-month delay could even result in the Council incurring extra Cost.

Councillor Ian Grayson added “ I think the public have a right to know what is going on. By not allowing my question to be asked and answered in public this is adding to the uncertainty”.
